READ: God’s black light

Hebrews 4:12 The Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
What has the Word of God revealed about your thoughts, motives, and intentions?I have always thought of myself as a ‘good’ person — obviously not perfect, but I thought, I was good enough compared to others. I didn’t have lots of enemies, I didn’t steal or kill people, I lived a quiet, normal life. However, as I read and study the Bible, God made me realize that my definition of ‘good’ is very different from His definition of ‘good’. I learned that no one can be good enough, but He will justify us through the cleansing of our sins by Jesus’ blood. As I study the Bible, God always expose thoughts, motives and intentions in my heart that are not pleasing to Him. He points out things that I should not be thinking or doing, He corrects mistakes that I keep on doing, and He teaches the truth about what I thought was right. Some may imagine God as someone who stares at us 24/7 and shouts “Gotcha!” every single time we make a mistake. No. God is not out to get us. He doesn’t stop at pointing out the impurities in our heart. Through the Holy Spirit, He gave us the power to turn away from our sins and grow into a loving relationship with Him.
How will you more fully open your heart to its work?Sadly, although many of us read and know about God’s word, we never take it seriously. The Bible isn’t meant to be just an inspiring Book that gives us warm feelings and nice thoughts — it’s meant to be the guidebook of our lives. It’s meant to be manual for our lives on earth, something that moves us into action. It’s not just a painting that is meant to give us feelings of awe, and then we walk out of the museum and forget about it. It’s not like a buffet dinner where we pick what we want and forget the rest.Fully opening my heart to the amazing work that God’s work can do in my life means that I have to live it. I have to do it. It has to be the ‘battery’ that moves my life into action, and without it, I will die. For the Word of God to have an effect in my life, I must follow everything it says, and not just pick the ones that are convenient for me. Like breakfast, it should become my spiritual energy by reading and meditating on it first thing in the morning. I must not be satisfied by just touching it, but I should live it and breathe it into my system. Only then can I experience the real transforming power of God in my life.
Prayer: Father, I must admit that even though I read and study your Word regularly, there are times when I don’t take it seriously. Change me, God! Give me the power to be obedient in your Word. Give me the power to follow what You want me to do, and turn away from the things that displease You. My life is Yours. Let me experience your enabling grace and piercing light of Your word in my life. Amen.
